Installing a Roof Rack to a New Land Rover Defender 130

by Tom Ward 15 Mar 2024 0 Comments

We have recently installed a Front Runner Slimline 2 Roof Rack to a New Land Rover Defender 130. This vehicle had the OEM Factory Fitted T-Track on its roof. These are fastened to the vehicle with bolts under flush cappings on the track. Once the cappings are removed, its time to remove the bolts. Land Rover have used quite a lot of Loctite on these bolts so it is important not to force them undone as this can round the bolt head or even worse loosen the nutsert which is fastened in the roof (either would cause headaches).

To help with removing the bolts from the roof it is recommended to use heat on the bolt which will then soften the Loctite allowing you to carefully and slowly undo the bolts. It is extremely important not to over heat the paint work or any glass which may be on the roof as this may cause damage.

Once all bolts are removed, installation of the roof rack is fairly straight forward. Use silicone over the holes so when installing the new bolts the roof becomes watertight. Use the spacers provided to raise the rack to the required height. Loosen fasten the legs/feet to the roof ensuring all bolts go in without any problems before tightening up to the recommended amount. With a friend or two, then carefully lift the roof racks tray on to the legs and install with the bolts provided.

Top tip: Remember to slide one of the bolts to fasten down the tray into the front slat on each side before installing the wind deflector. Do this before lifting the tray on as it makes it much easier than trying to lean over a car to install the wind deflector on the underside of the rack.
