Land Rover Defender 90 TentBox Fitting to a Roof Rack on a Roll Cage

by Tom Ward 21 Mar 2019 0 Comments

Yesterday saw a past customer return for additional items for their Land Rover Defender 90 before going camping to Scotland. New EBC Brake pads and discs were fitted to the vehicle along with a Front Runner Easy Out Awning using the Easy Out Awning Brackets also by Front Runner to attach the awning to the Slimline II Roof Rack.

The issues arose fitting the Tentbox Hard Shell Roof Tent. When normally fitting a hard shell tent or any style of roof tent to a rack its a tight squeeze underneath the rack to fasten the bolts, however it is completely doable. When adding a Roll Cage into the mix and bars from the roll cage spanning the gap you would normally squeeze your arm into the fitment of the tent becomes that bit harder.

Our solution... slide the TentBox to one side of the rack so that your arm can reach through the top of the roof rack and under the tent to fasten the bolts up. Tighten them up enough that they don't need many turns to finish the tightening but loose enough that the tent can still slide sideways along the rack slats. Then push the tent all the way to the other side of the rack and repeat the process. This time, when pushing the tent back in the opposite direction when the nuts are on the bolts pushing it to the centre of the vehicle into its final position. We then used an elongated spanner covered in rubber and reached in to give the nuts there last few turns to ensure that the tent was fastened down nice and tight. The issues only arose at the rear of the Defender as there is of course the slanted roof at the roof allowing us to reach under the rack a lot easier.

The Tentbox has also now had a little bit of a redesign to include a moulded plastic base with a metal framework around it. This adds extra rigidity to the product whilst in use.
